Anachronia
New concerti for old instruments
With soprano Johanna Falkinger and a superb line-up of soloists, Barokkanerne (Norwegian Baroque Ensemble) brings together an exceptional team for this performance. Andre Lislevand is one of the leading viola da gamba players internationally in a new generation of musicians who were immersed in early music from the outset, rather than coming from modern instruments - although he did and still does moonlight as a brilliant electric guitarist. Norwegian recorder player, organist and harpsichordist Ingeborg Christophersen has brought the recorder into the mainstream in her own country with performances with all the major orchestras and numerous concerts over the past 20 years. Jadran Duncumb is one of the most sought-after lutenists today, with multiple awards for his solo recordings of J. S. Bach and Sylvius Weiss, as well as for his role as an accompanist on the theorbo, lute and guitar.
The lute, recorder and viol had their heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries, but as the new melodic instruments, and especially the violin, gained popularity with genres like the sonata and solo concerti, their popularity waned. This programme illustrates that they did not give up without a fight! Wild gamba solos, proto-classical theorbo lines, galant da capo recorder obbligato arias, and lute concerti may come together with striking effect. Georg Philipp Telemann’s Concerto in A minor for recorder, viola da gamba and orchestra is the most famous work on this concert programme. It is the only concerto we know of for its instrumentation and is a favourite on concert stages worldwide with its unique blend of foot-stomping folk dances, instrumental fireworks and courtly off-handedness.
